Wandsworth Open House Weekend

September 27th – October 8th

Sprout will be an open house venue for the 2 weeks spanning the Wandsworth Open House weekends programme to 4 local artists -

Valerie Taylor, Ann Funston, Lesley Martin and Caroline Jefford.
This is a brief introduction to each of the artists.
Valerie Taylor
Valerie Taylor's work has been described as 'gestural'. Specialising mainly in landscape, she is happiest perched on a hillside with not too much sun or wind, working with charcoals and watercolours.
Ann Funston
Ann Funston studied painting in the sixties and has been making stained glass for the past 20 years. She is inspired by the energetic forms and colours found within landscape - particularly of Cornwall.
Caroline Jefford
Caroline Jefford works in silver and metal and using leaf patterns as a form of inspiration for decoration. Her work is contemporary and easily wearable.
Lesley Martin
Lesley Martin mostly works with Earthstone and Porcelain Paperclay, matt glazes, oxides and underglazes, sometimes introducing “ found “ ironmongery, high temperature firing wire and ceramic transfers. The theme of animals has been a constant one in her work, and more recently she has completed many commissions of clients dogs and cats.

Finding Colour

Tuesday 16 August- Saturday 3 September

Sofia Niazi brings an exhibition of multicoloured madness! Creating dry flour paste ‘walls’ Sofia makes hundreds of sections, which then give her the opportunity to mix and use as many colours as her imagination will allow.

This vibrant exhibition features a mix of paintings looking at patterns, landscapes, and even text. While working with this batik technique for over a year, she has also begun mixing found images with her batiks, to create a variety of collage/mixed media pieces simply bursting with colour. Prepare to be dazzled as this exhibition marks a colourful start to summer in Furzedown.

Fio Adamson’s work returns to Sprout in the collection ‘Birthmarks’. In her new exhibition drawings are taken from her body or abstracted from the short life of her adopted daughter. Her materials this time include graphite, charcoal, marmite, and tea, in work arising from her passion for art and for life. This is a must see exhibition this spring!

Drawing with Passion
A workshop with Fio Adamson
Thursday 16 June 7.00-9.00 2011

What makes you feel passionate?  Your children? Poetry? Music? Steam engines......?  The workshop starts with getting to feel comfortable enough in a small group to really notice what thrills you.  Then using a variety of drawing materials, we will make marks on paper in response to these feelings.

Everyone is welcome. There are no pre-requisites such as thinking you are a ‘creative’ person or that you ‘can draw’, though it’s fine if you do.

Tick the Box Exhibition and Cyanotype Printing Workshop

‘Tick the Box:  exploring the intricacies of categorisation’
Tuesday 17th May - Saturday 28th May 2011

At the end of last year, the artist Maru Rojas was commissioned by the Wandsworth Arts Team to develop a project that explored our understanding of diversity and ethnicity, in relationship to those “tick the box” categories that have become so common today.

From October 2010 to April 2011 the artist had an exchange with a group of residents from the borough and created several works in response to this interchange. The works presented here are part of the outcome of this commission. This exhibition is the continuation of the show currently on display at Southside Shopping Centre as part of the Wandsworth Arts Festival.
Opening May 17th 6pm - 8:30pm

Cyanotype Printing Workshop
Date:18th and 25th June
Time: 11am-1pm
Cost: £25
Location: Sprout Gallery, 74 Moyser Road SW16 6SQ

Led by artist Maru Rojas, the workshop will cover the basics of cyanotype printing. This is a traditional photographic method, which requires contact printing directly under UV light (the summer sun should be fine), using black & white negatives. The first workshop will be dedicated mainly to understanding the method, doing some test strips & preparing the negatives. Maru will then print the negatives for the second workshop, which will be dedicated to printing onto cyanotype-treated paper.

Each participant will produce 3 cyanotypes of approximately 8 x 6", or one A4 sized one.
